A remix by Nick of The
Music's song "The People", will appear on their new
single Freedom Fighters. Nick actually completed this remix way,
way back in January 2003, which is when he first told me about it
and also when he swore me to secrecy, as he was still awaiting
Virgin's okay and approval of the track. They have been sitting
on the remix since then, and I for one was wondering when it
would ever make it's appearance. Well now it has! Apparently the former Verve, now The Music's manager Jazz Summers initially put
the remix job Nick's way.
Nick told me "Not gone mad with it but it's pretty
different. Funkadelic on mogodon. Slowed it down and chucked out
all the guitars, lol. Of the two mixes (I did), they went for the
full vocal version, no matter though, I'm still well happy with
it. I'm pretty sure it's probably one of the best things I've
done for general release."
Nick also said that to help him along with the task of the
remix, The Music kindly sent him the separated tracks of their
song "The People"....all 84 of them!
The following news about the remix also appears on NME.com:
McCABE BACK IN MUSIC!
THE MUSIC'S new single features a remix by
ex-THE VERVE guitarist NICK McCABE.
The band release their new single Freedom Fighters on September 6 via Virgin. The track is the first official single to be lifted from their second album Welcome To The North, which follows on September 20.
The enhanced CD version of the single features a McCabe remix of their song The People. Other additional tracks across the formats include Come What May, So Low and Getaway (slow version).
The full tracklisting for 'Welcome To The North' is:
McCabe was the guitarist in The Verve, but following their split in 1998 has kept a relatively low profile while former singer Richard Ashcroft embarked on a solo career.

Most people, judging by
the emails I've received reminding me of the fact, now seem to be
aware that Nick contributed to one of the tracks (Walking Home)
on John Martyn's new album (On The Cobbles). Nick informed me
about his involvement at the end of 2002. At the time and at his
request I said nothing about it, but as it's now common knowledge
there's little point in claiming ignorence. Apparently the lesser
of the two tracks he did was revamped and released, hence Nick's
somewhat guarded enthusiasm, ( that's not to say he totally dislikes the results I hasten to add.....). The 'greater' of the two tracks
failed to make it past the record company and the original
version of the track that was eventually released, I gather lost
out to the session musicians!

Having at long last asked Nick, he has supplied me with
a full list of equipment which he used on A Storm In Heaven,
along with a few comments. It makes interesting reading,
especially for all those guitarists out there who try to emulate
Nick's sound and it also finally clarifies a topic which has long
been debated over.To see the complete list go to the set up page.
January 2003 |
It has recently been
reported in NME and The Sun newspaper, that Nick is to
be the replacement Blur guitarist following Graham Coxon's
departure.
To clarify situation.....
I have been in touch with Nick, and he has asked me to put the
record straight on his behalf.
Contrary to all the popular rumours which are doing the rounds at
the moment, Nick is not about to join Blur. He
has never even met Damon Albarn, in fact Nick himself only became
aware of the rumour when his accountant happened to mention it
(!), and he is somewhat unimpressed with the supposed
associations that are currently being made between himself and Blur.

The interview which Ajay Sharma held with
Nick way back in 1999, is now online at http://www.excellentonline.com/article.php3?story_id=785. The link is shown here as a
courtesy to those who wish to read it. It was however posted
without having been sanctioned by Nick himself, a move which has
not escaped notice. It's an interesting read in
parts, but it was conducted when Nick was still feeling very raw
after the events surrounding the break up of the Verve, and
should be read in context.
